The Goal : A World Class Dressage Complex Minimize
We want to have a world class dressage complex at the Kentucky Horse Park.  To achieve this goal KDA is a key particpant with the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation and the Kentucky Horse Park in the effort to design a world class complex and raise the money to make our vision a reality.
Much thanks goes to the efforts of Roco Glbala, Keith Messinger and Sheila Woerth who have worked very hard to draw up these plans.
Please contact Sheila Woerth  with Dressage Complex design questions, suggestions and fund raising ideas.
The Layout Minimize

 Proposed Complex
The proposed layout of the KHP Dressage complex will have a terraced viewing area south of the Arena 5.  It includes a new show office on the race track curve near the rest rooms.  Diagonal from that on the northwest corner of the track would be a dedicated lunging area which is fenced off and landscaped.
The warm arenas on the track (the old CDI/FEI warm-ups) will be fenced for safety.  The east and north sides will have a stone wall lined with limestone similar to those along Paris Pike.  The west side would have a 4 board fence.
The entry path to the Arena 5 area shown here as a single path will be split into separate pedestrian and horse paths.

FYI - The Alltech Arena is not a viable option as a dressage arena because there is not a 20m x 40m warm-up area available.
The Footing Minimize
After consulting dressage riders around the country, the consensus is that  MC Ecotrack ® would the the optimal choice for the KPH Dressage Complex.  This material needs little watering and dragging.  The reduced watering is key as the Kentucky Horse Park will be charging more for water in the coming years because of the increased sewer tax they have to pay.
Rings would be installed with a vertical drainage system underneath a Geotextile fabric similar to the construction seen in progress in the photo to the left.

The Costs Minimize
Now for the hard part, the cost of construction...
Please be aware that the following are estimates that have been given in good faith.

Plans for the entire dressage complex
$20,000
Rebuild first 2 arenas with drainage, elevation above grade and new footing
 $463,000
Revising the drainage for the entire dressage complex    $547,000
A New Show Office Minimize

We have a proposed design and layout for a new show office.  It has the secretary's office to the far left, with scoring next door.  On the right side of the central hallway are rooms for Awards and Volunteers, plus a judges break room and a kitchen in the corner.  The kitchen has an outside entrance for caterers to bring in food.  Between the kitchen and the central hallway is a media room.  Restrooms are off the hallway to the secretary's office.
Drainage Plans Minimize
A major component of making the KHP Dressage Complex into a world class facility is getting the drainage right.  Our hardy crew of volunteers has surveyed the entire area and combined the data with previous survey information (when the race track was evaluated for the Jockey School).  With this information Keith Messinger of the HDR Company (who designed the Alltech Arena) drew up a drainage plan which links each arena's vertical drainage system into a central drain culvert and a retention basin (on the west side of the track).
Please note when looking at the drainage plan, that the open pavilion shown on this plan has since been removed from the master plan.
